REVIEW FOR THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES The Secret Life of Bees is an extraordinary book, written by Sue Monk Kidd. Sue won a Poets and Writers Award, Anne Porter Award, and a Bread Loaf Scholarship. She grew up in Georgia during the 1960’s, where she got her inspiration to write. The Secret Life of Bees is about a teenage girl, Lily Owens, who has been abused by her father, and lives in South Carolina. All her life, Lily has been trying to figure out her past. The only truth to her past is that she was responsible for her mother’s death. Ever since then she tries to find love, but can’t. She runs away to three sisters who are black beekeepers. The book takes place in the 1960’s, where racism was abundant. She truly feels the love she was looking for. With the sisters, Lily discovers her destiny and the truth to her past. This book was very well written. A very powerful story of love and realization that everyone has a part in the world and no one is left alone. It is very deep, but depth can be explained in the novel. This would be advisable for teens wanting to see truth, and about deeper meaning.
