Pride and Prejudice Review

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
                                           Review by Sarah Lederman
Jane Austen, an English novelist, was born on December 16, 1775, in the Parsonage house of
Steventon, Hampshire. She was schooled in Southampton and Reading for a short period but was
mostly home-educated. She began writing at age twelve, and her first two novels, “Elinor and
Marianne” and “First Impressions” were never published in their original forms. The former was
reworked into Sense and Sensibility, and the latter was reworked into Pride and Prejudice.
Austen completed four more novels, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and
Persuasion, all of which were published anonymously. She died on July 18, 1817. Her novel,
Pride and Prejudice, takes place in late 1700s England. It is about the Bennet family and their
five daughters who need to marry rich. When a wealthy young man named Bingley comes to
town and takes an interest in Jane Bennet, Mrs. Bennet’s hopes rise, but when he leaves for
London without so much as a goodbye, both Jane and her mother are left wondering if he loves
her enough to ever return… Meanwhile, Mr. Bingley’s friend, Mr. Darcy, finds himself attracted
to Elizabeth Bennet despite her lower class, but she is caught in her first impressions of him as
proud and arrogant. Can they overcome their prejudices against each other for the sake of love?
Pride and Prejudice is an interesting but long-winded novel. I would definitely
recommend it to a reader eager to place himself into a character’s shoes and into 1700s life for
approximately 15 hours. For less patient readers, I would recommend a shorter, faster-paced
boo
